Abstract

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) encompasses chronic inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal tract. They occur in both humans and other animals and their prevalence varies globally. Although their exact etiology remains uncertain, it is accepted that they result from a complex interaction between the immune system, intestinal microbiota, genetic susceptibility and environmental factors. Conventional pharmacological treatment does not ensure long-term benefits. Recently, the use of natural plant compounds, such as cannabinoids from cannabis (Cannabis sativa L.), have been investigated as potential therapeutic agents for IBD. Phytocannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoidome, which plays a crucial role in gastrointestinal health and in modulating pathological processes such as chronic inflammation. In the present work we will address the characteristics of IBD, the cannabis plant, its therapeutic potential and its history of medicinal use by mankind.
