Evaluación de la actividad antimicrobiana de Olea europaea (Olivo) contra la bacteria cariogénica Streptococcus mutans

El uso de plantas como fuente medicinal ha aumentado en las últimas tres décadas debido a ventajas como la seguridad, eficacia y disponibilidad global. La caries dental es la enfermedad bacteriana crónica más prevalente a nivel mundial. Este estudio evaluó el potencial antimicrobiano in vitro del extracto acuoso (EA) de Olea europaea contra Streptococcus mutans, principal agente etiológico de la caries dental. La actividad antimicrobiana se evaluó mediante el método de difusión en disco y la susceptibilidad microbiana se determinó con el método de concentración mínima inhibitoria (CMI). La zona media de inhibición fue de 7,5 ± 1,74 mm a 250µg/mL. En todas las concentraciones probadas, S. mutans fue significativamente (p < 0,05) sensible al EA de O. europaea. Se observó una inhibición del crecimiento del 67,4 ± 4,6% a 250µg/mL, con un valor de IC₅₀ de 96,97µg/mL. Estos resultados indican que O. europaea posee actividad antimicrobiana contra S. mutans.
